What is a Horgodera?
Horgodera’s are a common species of deer that roam in Everdark. They have evolved from a smaller forest dwelling deer called the Horgo which are now extinct. Horgodera’s are much larger than Horgos’ and live on forest edges, they have developed unique calls and mating rituals as they have evolved which has led to some unusual markings and behaviour.
Horgodera’s are very light footed and can sprint and jump very high. Although quite tall they are slender and have spindly legs which look frail, but are in-fact stronger than any other mammal bone. Horgodera’s are strong swimmers and can often be found crossing deep rivers in fast flowing currents, helping them to avoid predators. Their deep chest allows for abnormally large lungs enabling it to absorb more oxygen so it can run for longer periods without tiring, their large lungs also help them to hold their breath for a longer period of time in-case they are swept underwater.
Vocalisations
Horgordera’s make a range of noises depending on what they wish to communicate to one another. Some are listed below;
Warning call – a short snort followed by stamping of feet
Mating call – long bellows/barks and can sing like a wolfs howl
Fawn call – meow
Fawn warning call – loud short sharp squeaks
Doe call – Bleat
Stag call – short grunts
Males (stags)
Male Horgodera’s are known at Raino(s)
Females (does)
Female Horgodera’s are known as Raina(s)
Babies (fawns)
Baby Horgodera’s are known as Pipu(es) The baby is born pure brown with white spots to camouflage it from predators. They have no adult markings which makes them difficult to distinguish from normal deer fawns.
Diet
Horgodera’s a herbivores feeding mainly on grass, leaves, berries, tubers, and bark. Two of the plants that Horgodera browse are Creeping Silkweed and White Blackhaw, despite their toxic content.
(The Creeping Silkweed if ingested is toxic to most creatures in EverDark but the Horgodera has developed a resistance to this toxin and can secrete it once ingested from glands just under their ergot on their hind legs where they have sharp spike-like nails growing. White Black haw is only poisonous if the roots and leaves are ingested their berries are harmless but bitter).
